Goldenseal Information and Side Effects

Goldenseal root is derived from the goldenseal plant, which is native to America and widely used as a natural remedy. The name comes from the golden color of the roots of the goldenseal plant.

The alkaloids hydrastine and berberine are the active ingredients in goldenseal. These compounds are capable of destroying bacteria and viruses, as well as relieving inflammation and congestion.

Native Americans used goldenseal to treat skin diseases, wounds and eye inflammation. They introduced goldenseal to early settlers, and the root of the goldenseal plant continues to be used for a wide variety of purposes.

Considered a broad-spectrum herb, goldenseal contains many vitamins and minerals, including the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, as well as B complex vitamins. Goldenseal also contains the minerals calcium, iron and manganese.

References in medical books dating back to the early 1800's show the use of goldenseal tea as a treatment for indigestion. It was also used in patented medicines manufactured in North America after the Civil War. Today, goldenseal is widely used to treat cold and flu symptoms as well as for its antibacterial properties.

The herb can also be used to treat stomach ailments and urinary tract infections. In addition, goldenseal root is often used as a general tonic to strengthen the entire immune system. It is said to have anti-inflammatory properties that can ease inflamed membranes, including those in the eyes, ears, nose, throat and stomach. It may also help to regulate blood sugar levels, aid digestion and relieve constipation.

Since goldenseal root has been harvested extensively, it is nearly nonexistent in the wild. Most goldenseal available today is grown specifically for use as an herbal supplement. The pure herb, therefore, is very much in demand. Though it is popular in its own right, goldenseal is often part of an herbal preparation and is thought to enhance the potency of other herbs.

It is often found in combination with echinacea in preparations used to ward off colds and flu at the first sign of symptoms like sore throat or cough. \Other preparations that contain goldenseal include remedies for menstrual disorders, urinary tract infections, rheumatism, and muscle pain.

Goldenseal root is available as a whole root, in capsules or tablets and in tinctures. For maximum effectiveness, extracts that are standardized to contain 8-12% alkaloids should be used. In capsule or tablet form, the usual dosage is 250-500 mg three times per day. Liquid extracts are usually taken in three 2-4 ml doses per day. If the whole root is used, 4-6 grams per day in powdered form is usually recommended.

What About Goldenseal Side Effects?

Though generally safe, goldenseal root should not be taken in very large doses or for more than three weeks at a time. Because of the alkaloids in goldenseal, gastrointestinal distress may result from long term or excessive use. There should be a break of about two weeks between periods of use. As with many herbal supplements, use of this herb by pregnant and lactating women is not recommended. Similarly, children under the age of two should not use goldenseal root.
